PRR #8623 COLUMBIA CLUB
Built by Pullman in September 1929 in Lot #6274 to Plan #3989A as an 8 section (8S) sleeper-buffet lounge solarium observation, 1 of 15 such cars built in that Lot; cars were outshopped in August and September of that year. 12 of the 15 cars (including the COLUMBIA CLUB) were built for the PRR, 3 cars were built for the Erie, and 2 cars were built for the Rock Island. In 1957-1958, PRR withdrew these 12 cars from revenue service, and 11 of the 12 were subsequently converted to MofW bunk cars; the COLUMBIA CLUB as #492380. 4 of the PRR cars from this Lot are known to be extant: #8629 UNIVERSITY CLUB and #8620 ANTHRACITE CLUB (ex-COUNTRY CLUB) are owned by Iowa Pacific as #9170 and #9180 respectively, #8627 TRAFFIC CLUB was formerly owned by George Hart and is currently stored in Jim Thorpe, PA, and #8628 UNION LEAGUE CLUB is owned by the Horseshoe Curve Chapter NRHS and located at the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona.
