CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 at Naperville, Illinois on May 25, 1962, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This train caught me by surprise. I was at home two blocks away when I heard the whistle. I grabbed my camera and ran out the door, catching a side shot of the train as it passed by. I snapped a few more photos as it rolled west, then realized it was stopping at Naperville, a highly unusual event. I ran as fast as I could, followed by a few other folks also caught by surprise. The event was a steam trip for school children, who were loading at the station while I was running to catch up. The train was ready to depart as I snapped this photo. I don't know the destination of the train, but generally the trips for school childen went to state parks. For those interested, the number 1286 on the signal bridge indicated Track 1 Milepost 28.6, the next number (2286) indicates Track 2, same locaion.

Paul Flaherty General My second fan trip was aboard one pulled by ole 5632 in the '60's, my first was behind the CB&Q Mikado #4960. 5632 was my favorite in those days and being an oil burner, it did not need re-coaling at a time when all those facilities were gone. This guy had no problem streaching its legs to 60-MPH plus. 11/12/2014 12:12:58 PM
Paul Flaherty General PS: Where are the fashion police?? 11/13/2014 7:08:04 AM
Chuck Zeiler General With a little photo cropping I could have removed the fashionable gentleman from the frame, however, he was one of the folks running with me to get a shot, so I thought he deserved to stay in the picture. 11/13/2014 7:56:30 AM
Bruce Wallace General Actually 5632 had no problem stretching her legs way beyond 60 MPH. I know I have been on trips where we were hitting 85 MPH and there is a story that one night after a late start back from Galesburg to Chicago she was nearing 100 MPH to try to get back in time. 5632 was built to run and the CB&Q let her do exactly that. What is interesting is the photo location of Naperville, When SP 4449 stopped there about 5 yrs ago on it's way back from MI to OR the Militia Naperville PD had the whole area yellow taped off like a crime scene and were yelling at people to stand back. My how times have changed. 2/8/2016 2:37:11 PM
