AT&SF #1474 COCHITI         
Built in 1937 by Budd in Lot #967 as a 36 seat diner, 1 of 9 cars built in that Lot as the original trainset of the SUPER CHIEF. Lot #967 was ordered in April 1936 and all 9 cars were delivered in April 1937. The seating capacity of the COCHITI was later increased to 46, and the car was retired and sold in 1968 to J.W. Kerslake of Tea, SD. J.W. Kerslake had a collection of cars, 4 of which were ex-AT&SF, he also owned diner #1482, lunch counter #1552, and baggage #3419, all of which were originally located at the Bucksnort Junction restaurant in Tea. J.W.'s son Wayne later sold the #1474 and in 1979 moved the other 3 ex-AT&SF cars to Prairie Village in Madison, SD. 2 years later, he sold the cars to 1880 Town in Midland, SD. Of the 9 original SUPER CHIEF cars, 3 survive: the COCHITI at CSRM, club lounge-barber shop-dormitory #1370 ACOMA is in charter service as #800720, and sleeper lounge observation NAVAJO is at the Colorado RR Museum in Golden.
