CEI 2-8-0 #229 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois (ex-Frisco?)  Contributor's Pick!
Thanks to several people (see comments below) who left comments when I ran into trouble researching this unusual photo of a cab marked "Frisco" but a C&EI tender. This was originally built by Alco-Schenectady in 1904 as Chicago & Indiana Coal Rwy #229 which was under C&EI control. The H-5 class was absorbed into the CEI in 1911 which was in turn under the control of the SLSF (Frisco) RR. It was renumbered 873 and reclassified as C-39. The locos were eventually scrapped in Danville, IL, in July of 1934. Original Specs - serial #29064, class H-5, 58" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x30" cylinders, engine weight of 182,000 lb, tractive effort of 38,778 lb. James Bowie was the photographer. Althouth it took me awhile to get the page updated, I want to thanks to Robert Beichler, Grayson Warbritton, and Chuck Zeiler for their assistance.

Robert Beichler General With Stephenson Link Motion valves, you can see the link between divers 1 ans 2, along with the spoked pilot wheels this might be a late 1890s shot. If it is then the Frisco is the engines name, if she was a transfer then Frisco would have patched out their name. Really interesting find. 8/2/2014 7:34:47 PM
Grayson Warbritton General In the early 20th Century, 1902 until, 1913, the C&EI was part of the Frisco and the locomotives from some pictures I have seen had lettering of this nature. It wasn't a friendly ownership either from the reading I have done on it. 8/3/2014 8:38:25 AM

Chuck Zeiler General According to https://www.steamlocomotive.com/locobase.php?country=USA&wheel=2-8-0&railroad=cei - Locobase 7142 - this locomotive was built for Chicago & Indiana Coal Railway which was a subsidiary operation of the C&EI beginning in the 1890's and eventually aborbed by the C&EI around 1911. The Frisco had taken over the C&EI in 1902, with the C&EI returning to private ownership around 1922. See also http://ceihs.org/corporate-history/ 10/27/2020 4:08:59 PM
