UP lends a hand  Contributor's Pick!
I took the Pioneer and Cal Zephyr from Seattle to Chicago. This was about a year after the Thistle mudslide on the DRGW, and Amtrak was not yet running trains there. Numbers 5 and 6 detoured over UP from Salt Lake to Denver. UP added a unit, though as I recall, time keeping was not an issue, as the route was faster than the Rio Grande. Here we see UP 3301 leading the Amtrak power at Borie Jct.
