Louis Brzuchalski General The D3, is only 1 of 4 switch engines ordered by the former W&LE, in the 1940's. I believe 2 in 1940 and 2 in 1941, all marked "W.& L.E." D1,D2,D3,D4. They were not associated with the present day "WE" RR.I recall seeing all 4 of these switchers in storage at the WLE Front St. Yard area, in Toledo, Ohio, around 1947-48, when I was grownig up. I thought then that they were big boxes on wheels.I was between 7 & 8 when I saw them. When I hired out on the former NKP, WLE side in 1960, the oldtimers I worked with said the wese tent to the Brewster, Ohio, area, sometime in the late 40's, and never returned to Toledo. They always used steam locos until after the NKP leased the WLE in 1949. 1 loco was sold to the Wabash RR and wound up working for the Des Moines Union RR, I was told. Glad to see an "old friend" again. Thanks. 10/26/2004 5:40:44 PM
Louis Brzuchalski General Note: This unit should be listed under fallen flags account W&LE was leased in 1949 to the NKP, merged with NS, then NS, finally disappeared completely into NS, in order to sell almost all of the former WLE to the new WE, altho showing W&LE on locomotive sides, but assigned AAR reporting marks of WE. NS still ownes and operates about 53 miles of the old W&LE, from Toledo, Ohio to Bellevue, Ohio. 7/5/2006 2:45:11 AM
