Chuck Zeiler	General	From the book, 'Doodlebug Country', by Edmond Keilty: In 1939 six two-car railcar sets were obtained (by the Southern) from the Saint Louis Car Company. The motorcars had the shovelnose look then popular with new streamliners and were powered by the Fairbanks-morse opposed piston diesel engine, the first major application of this power plant in railroading. These mini-streamliners were named 'Golden Rod' for the Birmingham-Mobile run ((motor #1), the 'Joe Wheeler' for Oakdale-Chattanooga-Tuscumbia (motor #2), the 'Cracker' for Macom-Brunswick (motor #'s 3 and 4), and the 'Vulcan' for the Birmingham-Meridian schedule (motor #'s 40 and 41). Two of the units (motors #2 and #41) were sold to short lines, while the other units were cannibalized for parts. Number 40 was retired in August 1954.	9/26/2013 6:40:40 PM

Tony Fernandez	General	Another photo's caption described the front truck's wheel arrangement as "3" and the rear truck as "A-1-A" indicating that after its replacement, the front six-wheel truck was un-powered (it resembled the EMD E-unit truck) The rear truck had two powered axles, the center axle being an idler. Tony Fernandez	General	Correction to my above comments: The replacement front truck was a three-axle "drop-equalizer" type with equal axle spacing similar to that of an ALCO PA unit; the rear truck resembles that of an EMD "E-unit".
