| Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5060 presumed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in March 1917, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. In 1917 the CB&Q ordered 15 2-8-2's from Baldwin based on the earlier O-1 class with modifications producing the O-1-A. Whereas the O-1 had inside admission valves, the O-1-A had outside admission. In addition the linkage connecting the Hodges trailing truck was modified and Schmidt superheaters were applied. The success of this design brought about an additional order for 123 more 2-8-2's, built between 1917 and 1923. The O-1-A's built in 1923 were numbered downward in the 4940-4999 number series as the group was approaching the 5200 number series already assigned to the class O-2 Mikados. |
