Odd Unit on a Railroad Full of Odd Units  Contributor's Pick!
ROCK 4421 idles at the road's Ft Worth yard in January 1979. It was delivered as GP18M 1239 by EMD in 1963, with some components from wrecked F7B 676B. One of three similar units on the RI, it had the standard GP18 grills but with four 36" fans of earlier Geeps. 1239 went through the Rock's capital rebuild program at Silvis in 1976 and emerged as a GP9; at least that's what RI called it.
