Also known as "hurry up and wait", trains didn't always arrive on their advertised time, so sometimes you waited. On the left is the cab and hood of D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72. I'm 16 years old and standing on the steps of a Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad sleeper, shooting a train that the sleeper car will soon be attached to. The CB&Q had a connection from Denver to Colorado Springs (CS), and the connection cars would be removed from the arriving Denver Zephyr at Denver and attached to the rear of the D&RGW Train # 1, The Royal Gorge, for the connection move to CS. I vacationed with my parents in the summer of 1964, and on the last day of the vacation, they allowed me to hang around at the two railroad stations in CS. I photographed the removal of the connection at the D&RGW station and the re-connection to the returning Train # 2, also The Royal Gorge, which took us back to Denver for re-attachment to the DZ (Train # 10) for return to our home in the Chicago area. |
