D&RGW S2 101
D&RGW S2 101 at Alamosa, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built by Alco in September 1941 (c/n 69555), this particular locomotive was equipped with dual couplers on the rear, one offset and lower, for switching narrow gauge cars around the yard in Alamosa. The front had a unique sliding coupler that could be adjusted offset up or down with the aid of a power mechanism to accommodate either gauge. Electro-Motive SW1200 131 also had dual gauge couplers installed during 1966.

Gregg Bartley General Wow, what strange trucks on that guy. So, when this was used to switch narrow gage, how did that work, I wonder? Did this adjust to fit on narrow gage track? Or was it dual gage track where the locomotive ran on the standard gage and the rolling stock on the narrow gage? The mind boggles. At least mine does. 11/29/2012 4:48:19 PM
