IC Freight Station
This was the west side of the former Illinois Central freight station at Baton Rouge, as viewed from the south end. We are at the intersection of South River Road and Mayflower Street, facing northeast. The ICG main line between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is right on the other side of River Road, and the Mississippi River levee was directly behind the photographer. The building was later incorporated into the short-lived CATFISH TOWN development, and has since been incorporated into the BELLE OF BATON ROUGE CASINO.

Brian Binkley General It's sad that this are looks nothing like this anymore. The entire area was developed for a failed tourist attraction (Catfish Town) and then subsequently bought out by the Bell of Baton Rouge Casino. Today there is only a single rail line through this area and all of the tracks between the main and the freight docks are long gone. A parking garage now occupies the place of the brush on the right and the casino facilities have encompassed the freight depot structure. On the near side you can see a set of rails in the dirt. At one time the BRPD had their mounted unit's stables in this area. 5/16/2010 5:13:18 PM
