SP AXAVT
We're on the Southern Railway BACK BELT at Frenchman Street where the brakeman on SP train AXAVT had just "pulled the pin" and was signaling for his engineer to pull ahead. The AXAVT was one of the country's earliest dedicated stack trains; and when this photo was taken, it was one of the few then in operation. It ran from the Port of Long Beach to New Orleans, and handled American President Line containers exclusively, mostly on blue APLX cars. In this view, the cars were being delivered to the Southern Railway for delivery to their destination in Atlanta as a part of train No. 222. The locomotives were GP38-2 4802, GP35 6593, GP38-2 4830 and GP35M 4160.
