ICG Wreck 4
On 1 April 1975 the Illinois Central Gulf local heading south on the former Gulf Mobile & Ohio main line between Bogalusa and Slidell, Louisiana was diverted into the spur at Florenville and collided with some stored cars. Lead unit 8158 had been rebuilt from GP9 9158 in May 1968. After the wreck it returned to the railroad's shop at Paducah, Kentucky for some major work and re-entered service in April 1977 as ICG 8126. As bad as the damage was, there were no fatalities. Engineer Luther Walley survived on the walkway behind the cab, while another trainman was in the trailing unit.

Michael Palmieri General I don't know what the crew did to survive this, and I wasn't on a work train. A few of us just drove out here on Saturday afternoon and took pictures. 1/18/2010 3:58:37 PM
Lucas Connor General I'm surprised they rebuilt this unit, given how mangled it is. 3/10/2021 8:27:28 PM
