John R. Schmeling General Great Shot ! Joe here's what I know about the daylight locomotives from my time with SP's operating dept. There were two painted this way, the first one was a rebuilt SD45 released in Nov 1981 SP classified it as a SD44R # 7399 during its rebuilding its horse power was reduced with a large number of SD45s needing to be rebuilt this proved to be to costly so it was the only one. The SD40R 7342 was painted first in another version of the daylight scheme, both side of the locomotive had differnt schemes, lettering color was red on one side then gray on the other side, the red wings on the nose were featherd on one side but not on the other side. In 1984 the SD44R 7399 was painted in another daylight scheme the SD40R 7342 was then painted to match and both wrere used as helpers on the SP 4449 steam trip to the 1984 worlds fair in New Orleans, after that they were placed back into regular frieght service and sought after by railfans hoping to get pictures of them. Sometime in the mid 1980s 8/13/2010 6:47:16 AM
