Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4440) on EMD Order E792A, became BN 9929 and was sold for scrap January 25, 1971. It is seen here heading Train #21, The Morning Zephyr, through Naperville on its way to the Twin Cities. On this day, the observation car is coupled to the baggage car, the purpose is to save switching charges in Saint Paul by cutting off the locomotivces and baggage car at the station, leaving the train in the station, turning and servicing the locomotives (and baggage car) and returning to the station to couple back onto the waiting train. According to the June 1965 issue of the Official Guide, This train arrived in Minneapolis at 2:50 PM CST, and returned as Train 24, the Afternoon Zephyr, departing Minneapolis at 2:50 PM. I'm not sure how they pulled that off. |
