| Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad VO-1000 9376 at Clyde, Illinois on June 6, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of 30 Baldwin VO-1000's allotted to the CB&Q during World War II, when restrictions were placed on the locomotive builders by the War Production Board. The Q would have preferred EMD switchers, but EMD was restricted to building FT road diesels, and the switcher production was split between Alco and Baldwin. As it turned out, the Burlington was the third largest owner of VO-1000's, behind the Santa Fe (59) and the Frisco (38). This one was built during November 1944 (c/n 70318) and retired and traded to GE for new power during March 1966. However, in 1967 GE sold this and ten other CB&Q VO-1000's to the Atlantic Coast Line, and it continued working on the ACL (after July 1, 1967, the Seaboard Coast Line) in CB&Q paint and number until retired by the SCL sometime during 1977-78. |
