| CB&Q GP7 233, Fireman's side at Eola, Illinois on December 28, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q's GP7's were equipped with dual controls, this shows the Fireman's side. A similar set of controls were on the other side of the cab, so the Engineer would be on the proper side of the locomotive no matter which direction it was moving. Looking through the window, you can see a vertical pipe, which was the exhaust pipe for the Vapor Standby Heater, installed on the running board in front of the cab on the long hood side. The purpose of the heater was to heat and circulate the cooling water through the engine block when it was shut down in cold weather to prevent freezing. |
