CB&Q NW1 9201 and GP-30 964
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW1 9201 and GP30 964 at Clyde, Illinois, on June 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler Number 9201 was built by Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) in December 1937 (c/n 776), and traded to EMD in July 1965 for a SW-1200. It is one of 27 NW1s built, and two were owned by the CB&Q. The NW1 was powered by a 900 hp Winton 201A V-12 diesel prime mover coupled to a GE main generator driving four GE traction motors. By 1930, EMC and the Winton Engine Company had become subsidiaries of General Motors. The spotting feature of the NW1 is the side vents at the top of the hood at the radiator end. The N in NW indicates Nine hundred horsepower, and the W indicates a Welded frame. This locomotive could be ordered with a Cast frame, producing a NC1, and could also come with Westinghouse electrical gear.
