They have completed a runaround and will re-couple to their train in order to start working their way back to Appleton. The pulpwood cars on the team track in the background are owned by Marion Plywood Corp. (est. 1894). When loaded cars arrive the logs are trans-loaded to trucks for the 24-mile trip to Marion, WI. Marion had rail service, courtesy of C&NW, from 1879 to 1982. The reporting mark is based on Great Lakes Veneer, Inc., a subsidiary of Marion Plywood Corp. and co-located at its Marion, WI facility. |

All that remains is a runaround to access a pair of spurs for this side of the mill (out-of-frame to left) and a spur for the warehouse at right (that spur does not appear to be used much, if at all, currently). |

I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. |

An interesting, and unusual, CN local (returning from Waupaca) slows to halt short of N. Lake St. while headed southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Nov. '18. I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. A crewmember, holding a fusee, is preparing to dismount to flag the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning. |

After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck. |

Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 aI Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company#was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. |
