Built in 1956 by P-S in Lot #6970 to Plan #4202 as SAL 5DB sleeper 21 seat Sun Room buffet lounge #20 HOLLYWOOD BEACH, 1 of 3 such cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in January 1955 for the SILVER METEOR; cars were delivered in January 1956. In 1967, the names were changed from the BEACH-series to the SUN-series, HOLLYWOOD BEACH as SUN RAY. The BEACH names were then applied to the MOUNTAIN-series 6DB sleeper buffet lounges. In 1971, these 3 cars were sold to Amtrak as #3230-#3232. The SUN RAY was retired in October 1981 and sold to private ownership. 1 of 28 private cars that arrived in Seattle over several days for the 2013 AAPRCO convention train to Napa, CA. Later merged into the Seaboard Coast Line as #6501 and then Amtrak as #3231. One note that was mentioned is due to the glass roof panels, the heat buildup in the "solarium" part could be excessive and difficult to cool down. |

| Description: |
Side view of the former Seaboard Air Line sleeper/lounge car, Hollywood Beach, with its massive solarium windows at one end. The car was built by Pullman-Standard in 1956 with 5 bedrooms and a sun room and numbered 20. It features oversized windows that extend to the ceiling giving a feeling like you're riding in a Dome Car. This car ran on the original "Silver Meteor" from New York to Miami and was one of only three cars of its type to be built. The car was renumbered 6501 in 1967 and renamed "Sun Ray" by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Conveyed to Amtrak in 1971, the car was renumbered 3231 and was retired by Amtrak in October 1981. During the trip, announcement was made that the late actor Jackie Gleason from television's "The Honeymooners" used to ride in this car as he didn't like to fly. |
