Built in 1948 by Budd in Lot #9656-019 as CB&Q dome 46 seat chair (women and children) #4718 for the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR, 1 of 3 such domes (#4716 SILVER BRIDLE, #4717 SILVER LODGE, & #4718) built in that Lot, which was ordered in October 1945; cars were delivered between March and April 1948. There were 3 different variations of dome chairs (6 cars each) built for the CZ, all with 46 chairs (reserved) and 24 seats in the dome: dome chair (CZ-20), dome chair with conductor's desk in the long (rear) end (CZ-21), and dome chair with the short (forward) end reserved for women and children (CZ-22). There was 1 of each variation per train set, with the cars arranged CZ-22 to CZ-20 first to last; the CB&Q and WP each owned 7 dome chairs (#4716-#4722 and #811-#817 respectively) and the D&RGW owned 4 (#1105-#1108). Of the 6 women and children's dome chairs, besides the 3 cars owned by CB&Q, WP owned 2 (#811 SILVER DOLLAR & #812 SILVER FEATHER) and D&RGW owned 1 (#1105 SILVER BRONCO). The SILVER LARIAT was intended to be renumbered as BN #4682, but this not applied and the car was sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #9452. The SILVER LARIAT was retired and later sold in July 1984 to Ralph Orlandella of Sacramento and was acquired by California Zephyr Railcar Charters in 1985; parked at King Street Station with SILVER RAPIDS and PALM LEAF. This afternoon, I followed up on a phone call from Charlie Martin where he mentioned to me that BNSF's other ex-CB&Q dome car had found itself outside for the first time in probably a decade. In this case, the other ex-Burlington dome that's around the shops is the Silver Veranda, that can be seen here: flic.kr/p/dnkZbi According to THE Dome Car site ( www.trainweb.org/railnewspb/Q/#4719 ), this car was the CB&Q 4719 Silver Ranch coach for California Zephyr - became BN 4683 (not applied), to Amtrak 9453 - retired 7/81, to Salt Lake Garfield & Western (1982), to Kasten Railcar 9453 (800036), reviewed by VIA for purchase but was declined due to fire/vandalism damage, to Northern Railcar, to Kasten Railcar, to BN 1 (not applied) (1991), then BNSF 22 - stored in Topeka KS (2000). Hopefully this one can come back to life at some point, as it's awfully tough to beat those old Budd cars. |

CB&Q 24 seat dome-46 seat leg rest chair #4722 SILVER STIRRUP, built by Budd in 1948 in Lot #9646-019 for the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR as a CZ-22 car (the CZ-22 domes were the third of the three dome chairs per trainset). The SILVER STIRRUP was planned to be renumbered as BN #4686, but this was not applied, and it was sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #9456. It was retired in February 1984 and sold to the Alaska RR, where it was initially planned to become #7003, but instead became #7034. Amtrak Dome Coach 9456, named SILVER STIRRUP, in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The SILVER STIRRUP was built by Budd on Job 9646-019, ordered in October 1945, delivered as CB&Q 4722 between January and February 1948 and assigned to the California Zephyr. It was assigned BN 4686 in 1970, number not applied, instead became AMTK 9456 and was sold by Amtrak in October 1984. It appears to have become DRCX 7034 (Denver Railway Car Company) and was leased to the Alaska Railroad, assigned ARR 7003, number not applied. ALASKA was applied to the letterboard, and at some point the name panel below the windows was removed. It was never used by the ARR and sat idle at the Anchorage shops until sometime in 1986 when the ARR purged steam heated rolling stock from its roster. Returned to DRCX, it was leased to Texas Limited Houston-Galveston (1989-1994), then leased to Mexican American Railways based in Nogales MX, tour service (2000), then leased to the short-lived ACADIAN Montreal - Maine - Halifax service (dates unknown by me). The assets of DRCX were sold at auction on May 13, 2004, the SILVER STIRRUP moved to Arizona, was refurbished at the Grand Canyon Railway's locomotive shops and became GCRY 7034, renamed GRAND VIEW. |

Rail Dome Corporation's Former CB&Q Budd Dome coach 4726, named SILVER RIVER, at Overland Park, Kansas on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by Budd on Job 9646-015, ordered in July 1947, delivered in October 1947, intended for service on the third Twin Cities Zephyr. Forward of the dome were 20 coach seats, under were the men's and Women's restrooms, and behind the dome was a 34 seat coach section. After the BN merger, this car was assigned BN 5481, not applied, sold to Amtrak, becoming AMTK 9541, retired in November 1977, sold in September 1978 to Gerome Bulock/Building Leasing Corp., to Tom Johnson/Rail Dome Corp., (800174) in 1986, to Northern Rail Car Cudahy WI (1987), Henry Quadrachi/Quad Graphics Hartland WI (6/88), brokered thru Kasten Railcar to VIA 524 (1989) - stored inactive Montreal (2000). Under the "B" end is a specially fabricated (not cast GSI) truck, possibly installed by the Aurora shops of the CB&Q. Car stripped, then sold to Gateway Coach/Ben Butterworth and moved to ITAC 12/06-1/07. Also seen are ex-CB&Q 4709, named SILVER CASTLE, one of two pattern domes converted by CB&Q's Aurora, Illinois shops from Budd flat top coaches, ex-CB&Q 320, named SILVER GARDEN, and the last car was ex-C&O 1850, once named MOONLIGHT DOME. |

CB&Q 50 seat leg rest chair #4734, built by Budd in 1952 in Lot #9613-112 for the AMERICAN ROYAL ZEPHYR. Planned to be renumbered as BN #5083 (which was not applied), sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #5013, was planned to be converted to head end power (HEP) as #5002, which was cancelled, instead was converted to HEP in 1985 as 40 seat café car #8714 for the AUTO TRAIN, was stored in 1994, and was later acquired in 2010 by the Cincinnati RY Company and entered service in 2011 on the Cincinnati Dinner Train. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Date is unknown. |
