IC 3103
Title:  IC 3103
Description:  A CN local picks up five boxcars from the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.), W7575 Poplar Rd., Shawano, WI, 54166 (physically located in Town of Richmond) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 19 Sep. '20. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50, they purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such in the '11 county atlas, the '20 township map, and the name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. The paper mill's historic office building (its green Mansard roof can be seen above the more modern single story office building) was constructed in 1901 of cream colored brick from the neighboring Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard (owned by Charles Larson, and later his son Thomas, for most, if not all, of its existence) produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The large facility contained three kilns and its own narrow gauge railway. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility, to include the Larson mansion. The paper mill's water treatment facility occupies the former site.

IC 3103
Title:  IC 3103
Description:  A CN crosses E. Green Bay St./Hwy. 22/Hwy. 47/Hwy. 55 (and formerly Hwy. 29) as it heads southeast with 5 boxcars via former SOO rails at Shawano, WI, on 19 Sep. '20. The SOO, originally W&N, depot would have been visible to the left of the train from 1906 until it disappeared in the fall of 2013. The United Cooperative Feed Mill, 660 E. Seward St., dominates the scene. Between 2015-'17, almost all of the feed mill's buildings were razed and new, larger ones erected in their place during a nearly $7 million expansion project.

IC 3103
Title:  IC 3103
Description:  A CN local prepares to service the Seneca Foods Corp. facility on S. Cleveland St. in Shawano, WI, on 19 Sep. '20. The address on the door is 200 N. Green Bay Ave., Gillett, WI, 54124, which seems to indicate that the canning plant in Gillett trucks their products about 25 miles to Shawano to be shipped by rail. Gillett was served by C&NW from 1884 to 1981. This facility is currently served by CN via former SOO rails. I haven't discovered what the old foundation to the right used to be.

The interesting, old brick building to the left of that is currently occupied by Gord's Pub, 210 Main St. Unfortunately it was built in Neenah, WI, which means it will likely soon be destroyed to make way for some new, modern eyesore (there is no room for classic or historic architecture in Future Neenah). The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., can be seen in the background above that. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., Neenah, WI, 54956, is partially visible to the right of that. Looking south from Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Some evidence of illegal dumping rests near the center of the scene.

The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible under the overpass. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993.
