Signals at Shawano Junction |
Description: |
Looking southwest along the CN rails from Towmen Rd. at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 25 Apr. '20. Near the bases of the existing block signals you can see recently installed new bases and conduit for new signals which will be installed soon. I love the faded Junction One Mile sign. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails (foreground). The track veering to the left connects to the former C&NW rails. |

CN 3122 and BNSF 5966 |
Description: |
A CN unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers parallels Harrison St. (out-of-frame to the left) and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 25 Apr. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3122 and BNSF 5966 pulling, as well as BNSF 9013 pushing. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel to the right. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 dominate the horizon. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. |

GTW 4907 |
Description: |
A CN local passes the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Apr. '20. Union St. can be seen to the left. The former Sherry St., Caroline St., and Adams St. grade crossings can also be seen. Arrowhead Park and Little Lake Butte des Morts can be seen beyond the Main St. overpass. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to incense the "great" City of Neenah. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. |

PRR Horseshoe Curve, c. 1854 |
Description: |
iCurve. Here is an image that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1854. Prominent here (R to L) are Tracks 1 and 2 of the Pennsylvania Railroad's mainline that was opened to traffic on Wednesday, 15 February 1854. Ascending the Allegheny Mountains and rounding the Curve is a wood-burning steam locomotive that's pulling a six-car passenger train on its way from Altoona to Johnstown and points West. Note that all of the hardwood trees have been harvested on the opposing hill. The photographer's name, the locomotive's road number, and the exact date are not recorded. |
