A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 21 Nov. '20. The train is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The Holiday gas station stood in this grassy area before the Main St. overpass (just out-of-frame to the right) was built. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. In the background, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Several of Neenah's repugnant, contemporary edifices taint the skyline in the background at right. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously. |

A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 21 Nov. '20. Train has just departed the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked. |

A CN local passes United Cooperative (formerly Greenville Co-op/Land O'Lakes Feed) and crosses Municipal Dr./Hwy. 76 as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Greenville, WI, on 22 Nov. '20. Founded as Greenville Cooperative in 1931, it merged with United Cooperative in 2017. The historic Greenville House, a.k.a. Kronser Hotel & Saloon, is partially visible at the right. Built by Joseph A. Kronser in 1897, it is currently home to Greenville Station (formerly Bootleggers). The depot, built in 1915 to replace the original (ca. 1876) depot, stood right about where that silver car and blue SUV are parked. Two fellow rail fans can be seen in the parking lot across the road to the left (those are their vehicles parked where the depot stood). Train was heading back to Appleton from New London. |
