IC 9601 |
Description: |
IC 9601 approaches the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it returns to the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Jul. '20. Union St. runs parallel just out-of-frame to the left. The former Sherry St., Caroline St., and Adams St. grade crossings can also be seen. Arrowhead Park and Little Lake Butte des Morts can be seen beyond the Main St. overpass. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to incense the "great" City of Neenah. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. |

Description: |
A CN local passes behind the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 26 Jul. '20. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but this isn't the first time I've watched them do it this way. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the locomotive is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001. |

Description: |
A CN local crosses Millview Dr. as it traverses the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 27 Jul. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen along Millview Dr. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) once stood beyond the train, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. Part of the foreground used to be the western end of the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which had stood for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, lies beyond the train. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. |

GTW 5850 |
Description: |
GTW 5850 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Aug. '20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

RDG Alco RS3 #487 - Reading Co |
Description: |
Built by Alco in June of 1952 (prime mover #12813), it served the Reading Company until the sale to Conrail in 1976. Not sure of its disposition, possibly scrapped or sold even before 1976 as it doesn't appear on the Conrail roster. A note on the back by photographer Paul Kuehner states "RDG RS3 487 - a yard drill." |

Double Heading Pair of PRR Steam Locomotive Helpers |
Description: |
Here is a beautiful action shot of a pair of Pennsylvania RR steam locomotivhelpers assisting a freight train around Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, PA. Robert Hess (see comment below) has identified the first helper loco as a PRR J1 or J1a class 2-10-4 while the second may be an I1sa 2-10-0 loco. Very much appreciate the help in correctly identifying the locos, Robert! Unfortunately, no additional information like date or photographer as well as locomotive numbers was given for the photo. But, it stands as a true iconic view into the steam era! |

PRR 2-10-4 #6421 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
Beautiful action shot at Horseshoe Curve of the powerful Pennsylvania 2-10-4 #6421 heading up a long string of freight cars through the historic Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, PA. Built in Pennsy's own Altoona shops in July of 1943, this loco produced an impressive boiler pressure of 275 and even more impressive tractive force of 95,484 lb! No wonder that PRR kept thses brutes long after diesels were making inroads on other steam locomotives. #6421 was finally retired in November of 1958 after only a short 15 year service record. No PRR 2-10-4 were preserved. No date was given so an approximate one was used. No photographer was listed but it very well may have been J.R. Quinn. |

PRR 2-10-4 #6465 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
As powerful as it looks in this photo, PRR 2-10-4 #6465 was just one of 125 PRR Altoona Shops built locomotives. These locomotives created 275 psi of boiler pressure and produced an impressive 95,484 lb of tractive force. The J1 class of 2-10-4's lasted until the late 1950's even though diesels were taking over the roster. This is a J.R. Quinn photo. |

PRR 2-10-4 #6466 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
Waiting with its string of freight is PRR 2-10-4 #6466. The massive and powerful loco was built by PRR's own Altoona Shops in February of 1943, just one of an army of 125 of them. The loco generated an impressive 275 psi boiler pressure and created 95,484 lb of tractive effort making it a formidable force on the rails. No wonder that the Pennsylvania kept them around until the late 1950's even though diesels were solidly taking over the roster. No location was given for this photo taken by J.R. Quinn. |

PRR 2-10-4 #6473 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
Coming around the Horseshoe curve with its unit coal train is PRR 2-10-4 #6473. With its impressive tractive effort of 95,484 lb, it could easily marshal these cars. Built by the PRR's Altoona Shops in February of 1943, the loco served the Pennsy well but even so, its service lasted barely 14 years before being retired and scrapped. Diesels had proven their worth even over a quality powerhouse as this 2-10-4! No photographer or date was given for the photo but it might be a J.R. Quinn photo. |
