GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local enters the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Jul. '20. I was standing in the middle of what was once the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

CN 3238
Title:  CN 3238
Description:  A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Jun. '20. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the locomotive. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to portions of the park, in preparation of future improvements. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, looms in the background to the left. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background to the right. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that. Train had two locomotives, CN 3238 pulling and CN 3055 pushing.

Description:  A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Jun. '20. Description:  IC 9601 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Jul.'20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility partially visible above the locomotive was Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility, 1111 Henry St. It was slated to close by 31 May '19. It was purchased by 5K Fibres, based in Greenville, WI, ca. Apr. '20. One use for their melt-blown fabric is N-95 masks.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  A CN local sets out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 26 Jul. '20. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but today they chose to pass behind it. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW.

Title:  GTW 4903
Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 via the former C&NW swing bridge as it hauls 10 cars westward through 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 24 Dec. '20. Local was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW steel stringer bridge over the Fox River, which opened earlier this year as a recreational trail. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. In the background you can see First Congregational United Church of Christ, 724 E. South River St. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

SOO SD60s on train X500
Title:  SOO SD60s on train X500
Description:  This eastbound freight train passes through Howell, Michigan in 2007. Soo Line locomotive #6047 is an SD60. The second engine, #6062, is an SD60M. This type model has a “Safety Cab” that was introduced by Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in 1989. Soo Line purchased five of them. These were the last engines the railroad bought. The red paint scheme is nicknamed “Candy Apple Red.” Canadian Pacific Railway purchased SOO Line in 1990. At this time, these freight trains used “Haulage Rights” over CSX across Michigan. They operated with CSX crews and connected CP trains from Canada to the old SOO in Illinois. Date approx. (Mamiya C330 Twin Lens medium format camera, Fuji NPS 160 print film)
