WM 4-6-2 #204 - Western Maryland |
Description: |
Near the end of its service, the 1912 Baldwin built 4-6-2 Pacific served the Western Maryland in an unorthodox manner as described by the unknown photogarapher on the back of the photo. "WM #204 (4-6-2) K-2 used to thaw frozen hopper cars at Port Covington, 1-14-58." As described on www.steamlocomotive.com by author John Bohon, "Two of the K-2's, 204 and 205, were selected for further duty as boilers providing steam used to thaw coal in hoppers before they were unloaded into ships at Port Covington, the WM port in Baltimore. The 204 was indeed used used as a thaw engine. There are photos of it in that service. The 204 lasted until about 1961 and was almost a complete locomotive. For WM fans this is the locomotive that truly got away. Located only a few miles from the B&O Museum so late it appears the railroad gave no thought to saving the 204 and simply scrapped it. What makes this even more interesting is that until retirement the 204 was considered by many on the railroad including management to be the belle of the road." |

WM 4-6-2 #205 - Western Maryland |
Description: |
Caught here heading up a passenger train somewhere in Maryland (locaiton not listed by the unknown photographer). With the tender piled high with coal, this photo was taken obviously before it was converted to oil buring in 1947. Author John Bohon describes #205 - "While in service to Baltimore, this loco was converted to oil burning to comply with Baltimore smoke regulations. As a result, this loco and its 4 other refitted sisters stayed east of Cumberland, MD. Two of the K-2's, 204 and 205, were selected for further duty as boilers providing steam used to thaw coal in hoppers before they were unloaded into ships at Port Covington, the WM port in Baltimore. The 205 was converted to thaw service and sent to Baltimore but so far I have not been able to find evidence it was ever used. At least a couple of pictures show 205 in Baltimore and so converted. 205 was probably scrapped in 1955 or 1956." Unknown photographer |

L&N 4-6-2 271 |
Description: |
Louisville & Nashville K-5 class 4-6-2 271 was running Iight in the 400-block of Elysian Fields Avenue, on its way from GENTILLY YARD to JULIA STREET YARD. The 271 was passing two New Orleans landmarks. On the right was the former Claiborne Power Station, which had been built in 1896 and was closed in 1922; while just behind the tender, at the corner of Decatur Street, was the home of Dickey’s Potato Chips – a long-time New Orleans institution. Notice the Automatic Train Stop equipment box on the 271’s boiler between the sand and steam domes. ATS was needed for operation between Gentilly and Mobile. (approximate date of photo) |
