As mentioned earlier, this tender could hold 26 tons of coal and 25,000 gallons of water. According to one source at the Lake Superior RR Museum,"when working at full power, [the locomotive] could consume some 10 to 12 tons of coal an hour and evaporate water into steam at the astounding rate of 12,000 gallons per hour. The amount of coal ...used in one hour would be enough to heat a home for two winters." (and Minnesota winters at that, one supposes.) |

The DMIR were so impressed with the first eight 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotives from Baldwin in 1941, they ordered another set in 1943. This one was built in January of 1943 (serial #64710) and lasted nearly 19 years in heavy iron ore drag service before being scrapped in 1962. Specs - M4 class, 63" drivers, 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 699,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 140,000 lb. There was no date, location or photographer listed for this photo so an approximate date and location were used. |
