CN 2811 and CN 2873 at C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office |
| Description: |
A southbound CN tank car unit train passes the yard office in an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 10 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. This building sits several yards south of the location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Train had three locomotives, CN 2811 and CN 2873 pulling, as well as CN 2909 pushing. The new bascule bridge over the Fox River is visible background right, it was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge. |

CN through freight is about to pass under the 2nd St. bridge as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Amherst Junction, WI on 25 Apr. '15. The track for interchange with the former GB&W is rising in the background. This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to shoot around the small tree growing on the embankment. While it is clearly visible in the photograph, it was not so visible in the view finder. |

| Description: |
A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the Main St. overpass as it leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. The north leg of the wye can be seen near the bottom of the photograph. In the foreground, fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation for future improvements to the park. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI, is partially visible at left. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while. |

| Description: |
A CN container train crosses Winchester Rd./Hwy. II, crosses Ehlers Rd., and approaches the Hwy. 41 overpass as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Mar. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 2812 and CN 3007. The first highway bridge over the then SOO railroad tracks here was built when Hwy. 41 was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities. The project commenced in the late-1930s and continued into the 1940s. The relocation allowed for expansion to a 4-lane highway (‘superhighway’ or ‘belt line’), as well as bypassing the congestion of the downtowns of Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. On 18 Apr. ’36, the State Highway Commission of Wis. authorized “construction of an overhead bridge in Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., on the proposed route of U.S. Highway 41.” The overpass project was referred to as the Neenah Belt Line Overhead. |

| Description: |
A CN container train crosses Winchester Rd./Hwy. II, crosses Ehlers Rd., and passes the Hwy. |

A CN container train passes the Hwy. G overpass and parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 4 Dec. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. |
