Photo Caption: "The engine 'Altoona' after being rebuilt in the Altoona shops in 1866. It was built by Smith and Perkins of Alexandria, Va., in October 1852 [and] was placed on the Eastern Division in December 1852. It was originally a 2-6-0, but was rebuilt into a 4-6-0, as were others of this type. In the background is the Logan House, while at the left is the St. Charles Hotel, once a famous hostelry in Altoona."

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1814, a G-5S (4-6-0) "Ten-Wheeler" built in Juniata as number "5704" during 1924, renumbered "1814" in January of 1952, and retired in February of 1954. Looks to me like #1814 and several other "Ten-Wheelers" have been marshalled for movement to the recycling plant.

Caption On Reverse: "Class G-5s Ten-Wheeler steam locomotives were designed for suburban service, providing quick acceleration between closely-spaced stations on commuter runs. Juniata Shops turned out 90 locomotives of this class for the PRR between 1923 and 1925. No. 1816 rests between runs at Pemberton, N.J., February 22, 1952." All three were built in Juniata. Engine #178 is a D-16SB built as a D-16B during 1900, later rebuilt as a D-16SB, and retired in September of 1929. Engine #6056 is an E-6S (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in April of 1914, later transferred to the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines, and retired in 1949. And engine #1961 is a G-5S built in 1923 and retired in March of 1950.
