CB&Q 163ABC* and Dinky in 1964
Title:  CB&Q 163ABC* and Dinky in 1964
Description:  *Note, there is actually no way to tell if the F3s are 163BC because two other F3s could have been hooked on that day. Assuming they are, then we have 163A F7A blt 1950, 163BC F3B F3A blt 1948 and a 2 car Dinky. This is no doubt the Fairview Av Interlocking.

CB&Q F7 163A
Title:  CB&Q F7 163A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 163A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9692) on EMD Order 3021, was wrecked at Tecumseh, Nebraska on July 5, 1968, and traded as credit on an order for SD45's in February 1969. It is seen here westbound on Track 3 on what, for a few minutes, was a very busy piece of railroad. Normally, Track 3 was for eastbound moves, although it was signalled for movement in either direction. When the gates started ringing, I grabbed my camera and shot the arriving Dinky (commuter train), which according to the CB&Q Employees Timetable #10 (effective April 25, 1965) was Train #111, on Track 1, the usual westbound track. The gates did not go up after the Dinky, and I saw two approaching headlights. The next train was westbound #25, the North Coast Limited, on Track 2. As #25 was passing, F7 163A passed by on Track 3. Most likely this freight will cross over behind #25 at Eola, about 5 or 6 miles further west. It certainly was an interesting couple of minutes.

Title:  CB&Q F7 163A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 163A at Plano, Illinois on March 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This unit was wrecked at Tecumseh, NE 7/7/68. Number 163A was delivered to the CB&Q during May 1950 (c/n 9692) as part of EMD Order 3021 for four A-units. These four units were mated to a F3 A-B set producing drawbar-connected F7A-F3B-F3A locomotive 163-166. The F7's were assigned the suffix "A", and the F3A was assigned the suffix "C", although the suffix was not displayed in the numberboard until the mid-1960's when the drawbars were replaced with couplers.

Title:  CB&Q F7 164A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 164A at Clyde, Illinois on June 6, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. When it was built in May 1950 (c/n 9693) on EMD Order 3021A, this locomotive was numbered 164 and mated with two F3's (137C and 137D) delivered in October 1948 to produce a semi-permanently-coupled 4500 horsepower locomotive 164. It remained in this configuration until a few months after this photo, when the drawbars were removed and replaced with couplers. At that time, the glass-beaded numberboard between the headlights was removed and the number with the letter A suffix was painted in its place. It was traded in as credit on an order of SD45's in February 1969.

CB&Q F7 164A
Title:  CB&Q F7 164A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 164A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 28, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I was fortunate to be able to read the model plate on the side of the locomotive, identifying it as an F7. Otherwise, I could not tell the difference between a Phase IV F3 and a Phase I F7, since EMD utilized the same carbody for both models. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #10:

In May 1950, the CB&Q proper acquired its only F7's - 10 A's and three B's. These units had a 36 inch diameter dynamic brake fan ahead of the four radiator fans, thus differentiating them from the Phase IV F3's. Nine of the F7's were numbered as three-unit drawbar-coupled A/B/A sets 167-169, while the other four A's were 163A through 166A. With the delivery of the F7's, two of the previously delivered four-unit F3 sets (137A-D and 138A-D) were broken up and reassembled with the remaining single F7 A-units to make up three-unit F3-A/F3-B/F7-A sets 163 through 166. The renumbering went as follows: 137A became 163C, 137B became 163B, 137C became 164B, 137D became 164C, 138A became 165C, 138B became 165B, 138C became 166B, 138D became 166C. The units in these F3-7 sets matched well, the only outwardly visible difference between the A-units being in the rooftop dynamic brakes. From the ground, the 163-166 sets appeared identical the pure F7 sets 167-169. Later, most of them were split into separate units, coupler equipped at both ends. The three-unit A/B/A sets were not split up until well into the 1960's, with the 167 trio finally being broken up into individual units late in 1965. Suffix letters had been assigned to the locomotives for maintenance purposes, but only appeared in small 1 inch lettering on the side below the word BURLINGTON, until the locomotives were broken up and equipped with couplers at both ends.

Title:  CB&Q F7 164A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 164A at Clyde, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Thic locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9693) and traded to EMD in February 1969. It was delivered as 164 and mated with two F3's previously delivered as 137C and 137D. The F3's were renumbered as 164, and were semi-permanently coupled to the newly delivered F7 to form a single locomotive numbered 164. Suffix letters were assigned to the individual units for maintenance purposes, but not displayed in the numberboards. As delivered, the cab units had glass-beaded numberboards below the top headlight. Sometime between July 28 and October 31, 1965, this locomotive was shopped and the drawbars were replaced with couplers, the glass-beaded numberboards were removed, and the road number with the suffix was painted below the top headlight. The suffix letters were added to the numberboards, and a suffix letter was added to the side number below the side cab window. It is seen here still coupled to the original F3's to which it was assigned, former 137C and 137D, now 164B and 164C.

CB&Q F7 165
Title:  CB&Q F7 165
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 20, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Although all three units were considered a single locomotive by the CB&Q ( they were drawbar-connected) , the lead cab unit is 165A ( note dynamic brake fan on roof ), the suffix was applied on the sides in small one-inch lettering below the word BURLINGTON, for maintenace purposes. The trailing units are F3's, previously delivered as 138B and 138A. Later, these units were broken up, couplers replaced the drawbars, and the suffix letter was applied to the side numbers and to the numberbaords. This shows the as-delivered beaded numberboard applied between the headlights and the coupler covers in the open position, however, the EMD fuel tank skirts have been removed.

CB&Q 165ABC in 1964
Title:  CB&Q 165ABC in 1964
Description:  Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3Bs. The train is the early morning "Pick Up" at Milledgeville, IL (122 miles from Chicago on the Twin Cities Line). If the train had a number, it was never used on the dispatcher's line. Yes it is a heck of a train to be doing local switching, but it did weekdays.

Title:  CB&Q F7 165A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165A at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This road freight is substituting for the East End Way Freight, setting out a boxcar at Kroehler Manufacturing Company. This locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9694) on EMD Order 3021A for four F7A units. These four F7's were mated with a F3A-B pair, producing a single three unit drawbar-connected locomotive 165. During the mid-1960's the drawbars were replaced with couplers and the suffix letter was added to the numberboards and painted on the nose.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Seen here with the sanders on, #165A is leaving Naperville after performing switching duties normally done by the East End Way Freight, which apparently had been annulled this day for reasons I do not know. I witnessed this three locomotive set switch Kroehler Mfg. Co. (the building in the background), normally switched by a NW2 or a GP7, and they were quick to leave town. CB&Q F7 165A was built in May 1950 (c/n 9694) and traded in on an order for SD45's in February 1969.

Normally this would be handled by a single locomotive assigned to the daily East End Way Freight, but for some reason the way freight did not run on this date, and road power did the switching.

Title:  CB&Q F7 165A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165A at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 165A is seen switching Kroeher Manufacturing Company in Naperville on this photo date. Usually this chore was handled by the East End Way Freight. I'm not sure why a road feight got the job on this date. I would speculate that either there was not enough work for the way freight to call a crew, or there were not enough crew men available to operate the way freight (this was in the era of five crew men per train). Whatever the case, this was highly unusual.

CB&Q F7 167
Title:  CB&Q F7 167
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 167 at Eola, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. My best guess says this is 167A (if I'm correct, then c/n 9696 on EMD Order 3058A) , based on equipment diagrams indicating that the B-unit's front coupled to the A. I determined the front of the B-unit based on the location of the batteries and fuel tank. Although the suffix letters were not displayed in the numberboards or sides numerals under the cab side window, the letters were assigned to each unit for maintenance purposes, and were painted on the side in small one inch letters below the word BURLINGTON. Later, when the units were broken up, and the drawbars between the units were replaced with couplers, the suffix letters were painted on the sides and between the headlights, and were displayed in the numberboards.

CB&Q F7 167A
Title:  CB&Q F7 167A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 167A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on October 9, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1950 (c/n 9696) on EMD Order 3058A, this was one of six F7A's on this order, one of only 10 F7A's purchased by the CB&Q. The CB&Q also purchased three F7B's (EMD Order 3058B) to make up three pure F7 A-B-A drawbar-connected locomotives 167-169. During the 1960's, the F7 sets were broken up, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and suffix letters were added to the numberboards and painted on the nose. This particular locomotive set received this modification sometime between October 1964 and October 1965. I'm not sure of the exact date the suffix letter was added, but I previously photographed this locomotive without suffix letters a year before this photo date.

CB&Q F7 168A
Title:  CB&Q F7 168A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 168A at the Clyde Diesel House, Clyde, Illinois on February 12, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1950 (c/n 9698) on EMD Order 3058A, it was traded in June 1970. This was the only CB&Q F-unit to make it into the BN merger. It was assigned number 796, but never received that number, traded instead on an order of SD45's in June 1970.

CB&Q F7 168C
Title:  CB&Q F7 168C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 168C eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 22, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9699) on EMD Order 3058A and traded in by BN for a SD45 in August 1970, never receiving a BN road number. It was delivered as the rear cab of F7 semi-permenantly coupled A/B/A set 168, one of three pure A/B/A F7 sets on the CB&Q. Although the suffix letters were assigned (and painted in one-inch letters below the word BURLINGTON), they never appeared in the numberboard or on the nose until the A/B/A sets were broken up in the 1960's, and couplers replaced the drawbars.

Title:  CB&Q F7 169A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 169A, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. My best guess is that this was shot in the late 1950's as the coupler covers were removed in the early 1960's.
