No info with this print. The location is unique, any help?? Looks like it might be the BAR crossing over the CP at Brownville Jct on the Iron Works Branch?? According to Angier & Cleaves excellent history of the BAR #103 was build in November 1929 by ALCO (#68221). A BAR class M, 4-8-2 (with booster) it ran at 240psi & had 63 inch drivers. CYL 22.5x30 quite a power house. It was scrapped in January of 1953. /DL |

BAR 4-8-2 #104 - Bangor & Aroostook |
| Description: |
Caught by the roundhouse and turntable at North Maine Juntion in Heermon, ME, this mighty 4-8-2 Mountain type loco was built by Alco-Schenectady in October of 1929 (serial #68525). These relatively small Mountain type locos with small drivers were for low-speed freight hauling. The loco lasted in service until being scrapped in June of 1950. The entire M class of 10 was retired between 1950-53 with none preserved. Specs - class M, 62" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 22.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 317,490 lb, tractive effort of 49,972 lb. Photo was obtained from the Henry O. Preble collection. |

Here is another 1929 Alco-Schenectady built 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive sitting at the edge of the turntable at the North Main Juntion yard near Hermon, ME. These relatively small Mountain type locos with small drivers were for low-speed freight hauling. Like many in its class, this loco met up with the scrapper's torch in June of 1950. Specs - class M, 62" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 22.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 317,490 lb, tractive effort of 49,972 lb.. Exact date of this photo is unknown. Although the photo is damaged near the pilot and front, it still shows an impressive 1935 Alco-Schenectady built small 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive used by Bangoor & Aroostook. These relatively small Mountain type locos with small drivers were for low-speed freight hauling. The entire M class of 10 was retired between 1950-53 with BAR #108 being one of the last to meet up with the scrapper's torch in January of 1953. Specs - class M, 62" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 22.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 317,490 lb, tractive effort of 49,972 lb. Date and location are unknown but it very well may be at the North Maine Junction yard near Hermon, ME as most 4-8-2's were serviced there. Unknown photographer. |
