I would speculate that this was Train Number 23, the Afternoon Zephyr, also known as the Twin Cities Zephyr. There were two Twin Cities Zephyrs in each direction every day, so they acquired the monikers Morning and Afternoon. I thought about cropping the photo better, but there is motion blur on the lead unit, so I decided to leave it as is. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9939B westbound on Train #17 at Naperville, Illinois on April 26, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Almost a classic California Zephyr photo if the weather had played nice, oh well. This locomotive was built in January 1950 (c/n 9678) on EMD Order 2012A, was destroyed in Gibson roundhouse fire, Omaha, Nebraska, February 19, 1969, retired in September 1969, and finally dismantled in December that year. |
