IC 3120
Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 24 Jan. '19. The historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St., stands at right. Founded at Elgin, IL, in 1898, they moved to Appleton in ‘01, where they built a facility next to the Wisconsin Tissue Paper Co. on John St. They constructed a new facility here at N. Union St. and E. Hancock St. in ’05. Over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block, as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. The company was purchased by Northern Paper Mills, Green Bay, on 18 Sep. ‘29. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a vile holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-‘70s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early ‘83, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. around 1990. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper and especially gift wrapping paper. There hadn’t been any business signs on the building for several years. Mach IV Motors, LLC, currently occupies some or all of the facility.

IC 3120
Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local crosses Kaukauna St. and is about to disappear behind the former Noffke Lumber facility as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 17 Feb. '19. It was a chance encounter. If I had been able to park a few seconds sooner, I would have been able to capture the business end of the locomotive before it started to become obscured.

IC 3120, IC 9565, CN 9424
Title:  IC 3120, IC 9565, CN 9424
Description:  A trio of CN locomotives rest in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Mar. '19. IC 9565 and CN 9424 rest on the main line. I'm not sure of their origin or destination, but it’s odd to see two locomotives passing through sans freight cars. IC 3120, the local power, rests on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye is hidden beneath the snow on this side of IC 3120.

IC 3120 and IC 9605
Title:  IC 3120 and IC 9605
Description:  The local power rests in front of the depot/yard office at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 22 Mar. '19. I was excited to see a pair of Geeps parked here, because it has been a while since they needed two units stationed here. My excitement was short-lived, within a few days there was only one unit stationed here again. The locomotives rest on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye can be seen on this side of the locomotives.

IC 3120
Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local services the east side of the Midwest Paper Group mill via former C&NW rails on 27 Apr. '19. Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it was controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Ten members of the mill’s management purchased the facility from France-based Sequana SA on 19 Dec. ’14. Forced into receivership, it was purchased by scrap dealers, Industrial Assets Corp. and Maynards Industries USA, in Oct. ’17. They bought it to shut it down and gut it. By some miracle, they changed their mind and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. The local was preparing to extract 5 boxcars from the shipping dock.

Description:  A CN local traverses the remnants of the small former C&NW yard while servicing the east side of the Midwest Paper Group mill at Combined Locks, WI on 27 Apr. '19. By some miracle, they changed their mind and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. Some of the rails were pulled up from this small yard in '13. All that remains is a runaround to access a pair of spurs for this side of the mill (out-of-frame to left) and a spur for the warehouse at right (that spur does not appear to be used much, if at all, currently). The mill's water treatment plant can be seen at left.

19 Apr. ’18. The mill's water treatment plant can be seen at right.

IC 3120
Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local traverses the remnants of the small former C&NW yard while servicing the east side of the Midwest Paper Group mill at Combined Locks, WI on 27 Apr. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. 19 Apr. ’18. Some of the rails were pulled up from this small yard in '13. All that remains is a runaround to access a pair of spurs for this side of the mill (out-of-frame to left) and a spur for the warehouse at right (that spur does not appear to be used much, if at all, currently). The mill's water treatment plant is partially visible at left. Until recently, the 6x6 post in the foreground (with the small, rusty arrow sign) used to support the Combine Locks station sign, the last time I saw it was 31 Mar. '18.

IC 3120
Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 27 Apr. '19. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. It is difficult to tell from this angle, but the train also crosses the Newberry Trail as it approaches the southeast end of the bridge. The canal comes in from the far side of the fence and tree at right. The water in the foreground is the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through 'The Flats.' Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race (behind me) which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

The facility partially visible to the left is currently home to JWM Coenen Mechanical (historically Allis-Chalmers, originally Valley Iron Works), 401 E. South Island St..
