iLocations. Here is an image showing the eastern face of two Pennsylvania Railroad tunnels in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 3 July 1902. At the left, locomotive smoke drifts out of the double-tracked Allegheny Tunnel, completed during 1854. From then until 1904, this was the PRR's only tunnel for both east- and westbound traffic. At the right, work has just begun on the Gallitzin Tunnel. Also notable are "SF" Tower at the left, the interlocking for the westbound track of the New Portage Branch line, the two-track signal bridge with semaphores at the tunnel's mouth, as well as PRR engine #1699 in the foreground. #1699 is an H-6 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata during 1899 and retired in September of 1925 after 26 years of service.
