Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #917, an E-3SD "Atlantic" built in Juniata as an E-3D during May of 1908, rebuilt as an E-3SD in September of 1912, and retired in August of 1939 after 31 years of faithful service. Doesnt look like it, but the type face on the number looks like it could be. We stopped near Mansfield for gas and a Mc Donalds tea off I 71, and saw this up on the hill behind the Mc Donalds, carrying a banner for the diner it was in front of. Any ideas on what the heritage of this engine is, please comment. |

| Description: |
A closer view of the steam engine behind the Mc Donalds in Mansfield. The RRPA system identifies the Pennsy engine with this number as a 4-4-2, but I can clearly see there are at least six driving wheels, and it may be a 2-8-0. I suspect the number may not be the engine's actual number, or it's not a PRR engine, which I suspect is the case. The fall color in the background is absolutely authentic!! |
