PRR New Portage Wreck, 1916
Title:  PRR New Portage Wreck, 1916
Description:  Here is a photo (with caption) from a November 1966 issue of the "Altoona Mirror" concerning the fatal wreck at the Pennsylvania Railroad's New Portage Junction (known locally as the "Wye Switches") in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 06 November 1916. Part of the caption reads: "It was 50 years ago, Nov. 6, 1916, that [this] disastrous freight wreck occurred near the Wye Switches at Duncansville. An eastbound freight train, No. 2736, went out of control descending the New Portage Branch from Gallitzin to Hollidaysburg and ran away to crash into four engines ~ Nos. 2477, 2759, 2665, and 971 ~ standing near the Wye Switches. Seven trainmen were killed in the wreck." The runaway train was headed by PRR engine #2736, an H-6A (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1905 and retired in July of 1926. Data for the other four locomotives are as follows. PRR engine #2477 was an H-6A (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1903, rebuilt in Juniata as an H-6SA in August of 1918, and retired in September of 1930. PRR engine #2759 was an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during 1915 and retired in April of 1950. PRR engine #2665 was an H-6A (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1905, renumbered "4046" in January of 1918, rebuilt in Juniata as an H-6SA in July of 1919, renumbered "3779" in January of 1921, and retired in December of 1933. PRR engine #971 was an H-6A (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1903 and retired in August of 1929.
