Kansas City Southern GP40 749 was parked at WEST YARD, just outside of New Orleans. It had been built in October 1968 as Penn Central 3172 (EMD 34613) and was acquired by the KCS in January 1984, after its initial 15-year lease expired. It was renumbered 4749 in early 1991 and was sent it to Morrison-Knudsen’s BOISE LOCOMOTIVE SHOP that September to be upgraded into a GP40M-2. It was released as KCS 4787 on 5 December 1991 and was subsequently renumbered 2834. |
