Extra Board. Here is a photo that was published originally in Dan Cupper's 1996 monograph entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad: Its Place In History 1846-1996," page 15. The photographer is not identified. Partial Caption: "On February 19, 1949, mail train No. 11 rear-ended standing M1a-class steam engine No. 6737 and a cabin car near Burgettstown, Pa., on the Pittsburgh-St. Louis main line." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6737 and #5841. #6737 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during June of 1930 and retired in August of 1955. #5841 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in August of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and renumbered "4241" in 1966. |

Sweetland. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in October of 1960. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8661, #5841, and two more E-7's whose numbers are not recorded. #8661 is an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in January of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. #5841 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in August of 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are pulling a passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, and are about to pass through one of the tunnels at Gallitzin on their way to Pittsburgh and points West. Visible in the foreground is the westbound connecting track to the New Portage Branch. |

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5841 and two more "EP" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5841 is an EP-20 built in August of 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They're departing the Station with a mail and express train bound for Pittsburgh and points East. Note the railroader with a broom, standing on the tracks, in front of the "Safety First" sign! ("Stoneborobranch"; #4 of 10) |
