CBQ 5357
Title:  CBQ 5357
Description:  Date is not known, nor the photographer. Note the railroad employee riding the front of the locomotive during switching movement. A highly dangerous practice frowned upon by today's standards!

CB&Q 0-6-0 Class G-10 565
Title:  CB&Q 0-6-0 Class G-10 565
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-10 565 I believe in Lincoln, Nebraska, sometime in 1956, negative by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 565 was built by Baldwin in 1904 as 2-6-2 Prairie CB&Q class R-4 number 1908 (c/n 24466), retired in July 1929 and rebuilt into a class G-10 0-6-0 and renumbered 565. A total of 35 R-4's (out of the original 40) were converted to 0-6-0's and given road numbers 560-594. Some of these lasted into the 1950's. This one retained the inboard piston valves of the R-4 when rebuilt, although 14 R-4's received new cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear during 1925.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5136
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5136
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5136 at Lincoln, Nebraska on May 26 1956, photograph by M. D. McCarter, Louis Zadnichek collection. Number 5136 was built by Baldwin in July 1922 ( c/n 55500 ) and sold for scrap in December 1957. It was equipped with 27 X 30 cylinders and 64 inch drivers. The extended smokebox indicates this locomotive was set up to burn Lignite coal which, due to the high ash content, required more screening in the smokebox. The following is from Hol Wagner:

Known as L&B Front End ( Lignite & Bituminous), it worked for both, and that's why the extension and its "guts" did not have to be removed when a locomotive was reassigned to non-lignite burning divisions; only the grates had to be changed. And for reference, the Omaha, Lincoln and Wymore divisions were never lignite burning divisions. Alliance, McCook, Sterling, Casper and Sheridan were the only ones, but Sterling and Casper became oil-burning divisions by 1930. To the best of my knowledge, the only Q locomotives that came from the builder with L&B front ends were the class B-1 and B-1-A Mountains ( 4-8-2 ); all others were fitted with them by the railroad.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-3 5357
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-3 5357
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-3 5357 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in July 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built by Baldwin in April 1919 (c/n 51742), sold for scrap in November 1960, this was one of 60 class O-3 2-8-2 locomotives delivered between 1915 and 1919, road numbers 5300-5359. The first 15 were built with alligator-type crossheads, the subsequent O-3's were equipped with Laird-type crossheads. Originally equipped with a Street automatic stoker, they were later equipped with either the Duplex or Standard MB stokers. The single stage air compressors were replaced with cross-compound pumps. Feedwater heaters were eventually installed on the O-3's, either the Coffin, Elesco, or Worthington BL types.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5614
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5614
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5614 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in September 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Assembled during July 1937 by the CB&Q's at the West Burlington Shops, the boiler was supplied by Baldwin. It was retired and donated to the City of Saint Joseph, Missouri during May 1962. I've classed this locomotive as an O-5-B. It was built as a coal-burning class O-5-A, but at some point was converted to burn oil, so I assume it was re-classed.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-3 5333
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-3 5333
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-3 5333 in the dead line at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in December 1957, photograph by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5333 was built in June 1917 ( c/n 45764 ) and retired in December 1957. The class O-3 was a modified design of the earlier class O-2 engines. Sixty engines of the O-3 class were built by Baldwin from 1915 to 1919. They were assigned road numbers 5300 - 5359. Although the first 15 O-3 engines, built in 1915, were equipped with alligator-type crossheads, the subsequent O-3 Mikados were all fittted with Laird-type crossheads, reducing reciprocating weight. Accessories on the class O-3 locomotives, when first built, included a combustion chamber, a brick arch in the firebox, a Schmidt-type superheater, and a Street automatic stoker. In later years, the O-3 engines were modified with shorter cabs, the single stage air compressors were replaced with cross-compound types, and feedwater-heating systems of either the Worthington or Elesco types were applied to many. Some of the O-3's were fitted with exhaust steam injectors, and a few others had Coffin feedwater heaters mounted on the front of their smokeboxes. It appears that this particular locomotive did acquire a Boxpok main driver. I wish I could speak about the tender design.

CB&Q 9900
Title:  CB&Q 9900
Description:  CB&Q Pioneer Zephyr 9900 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown da| in July, 1959, photo by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built April 7, 1934 (ordered June 17, 1933) by Budd (c/n 509), powered by an EMC Winton eight-cylinher Model 201A diesel (original block was s/n 4510, now at the Smithsonian, replaced around 1937 with block s/n 4686) , it is seen here in one of its many configuratUons during its service life. Originally a three car train (power unit, baggage/coach, coach/observation) it was re-equipped in late-1934 by adding chair car 525, re-equipped again Tn 1937 with car 500 (40 chair seats and a buffet/pantry/kitchen) replacing 525. Another modification was to move the air horns from behind the intake grills (which were directed downward, to the annoyance of the engine crew) to the roof top. Between 1946-48, the Zephyr (officially re-named the Pioneer Zephyr November 11, 1936) acquired the Mars Light above the headlight. It was regularly assigned to Omaha-Kansas City routes until retired in 1960 and donated to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Between 1994-1998, the Pioneer Zephyr was cosmetically restored to as-built appearance and the Mars Light was removed. The four yellow hash marks seen below the cab window are service marks (one hash mark for each five years of service) applied by the Burlington during the late-1940's. It will shortly receive a fifth hash mark just before retirement.

Built in November 1952 (c/n 17397) on EMD, it became BN 6049 and was retired in August 1983. The CB&Q ordered 12 bare bones SD7's (400-411) on EMD Order 5140, with no dynamic brakes, no steam generator, a single fuel tank, and dual controls, for service on the Ashland, Nebraska - Sioux City line where bridges were not sufficiently strong for heavier power. They weighed 297,875 pounds versus a SD7 in the 300 series which weighed 321,590 pounds. Although a GP7 was lighter at 250,100 pounds, the weight of the 400 series SD7 was distributed across six axles. A GP7 = 62,525 pounds/axle; A 300 series SD7 = 53,598 pounds/axle; a 400 series SD7 = 49,646 pounds/axle.

CB&Q SD9s 454
Title:  CB&Q SD9s 454
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD9s 454 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in March 1961, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built September 1957 (c/n 23633) on EMD Order 5549, it became BN 6201 and was retired February 1985. It was one of 20 (#'s 440-459) built in what the CB&Q classed as a SD9s, the lower case "s" denoting a single control stand. Most CB&Q SD9 locomotives were equipped with dual controls and signal (Mars) lights on both ends. The 20 class SD9s had a single fuel tank and single signal light on the front only. This order represented the last SD9's delivered to the CB&Q, although subsidiary C&S received two orders of SD9's (#'s 820-830 and 831-842), the second order being Phase II design with a taller cab and short hood, 48" fans, and a fuel breather pipe. This order brought the CB&Q total of SD9's to 80, and with the addition of the 23 C&S SD9's, the systemwide total was 103 units, second only to the Southern Pacific.

CB&Q PMC 9772
Title:  CB&Q PMC 9772
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9772 near Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in February 1962, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. In tow is coach number 6000, named 'Silver Pendulum', an orphan in the Q's passenger department. It was built by Pacific Railway Equipment Company in 1942, one of three built ( the Great Northern and Santa Fe also each got one). Its suspension was as its name implies; the car would swing like a pendulum in curves similar to a Talgo train. However, this did not play well with other cars so the car spent its final years in the service pictured.

UP DC-3
Title:  UP DC-3
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad DC-3 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in March 1962, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This appears to be the second permutation of the DC-3 on the UP. It started out as a gas-electric built in 1928 by the J. G. Brill Company on Order 22749 as D&M 201. It was a Model 350 powered by a Hall-Scott 300 horsepower gasoline engine driving GE electrical gear. It seated 38 passengers and weighed 58 tons. In 1952 it was sold to Teledetector Company of Chicago and converted to a rail defect detector car. However, the company did not survive and sold the detector car to the UP in April 1954. It became DC-3 and still had the as-built Brill front. It was rebuilt in 1961, acquiring the brow over the front windows as seen here, and rebuilt again around 1983, acquiring yet another front end arrangement. Note that in this arrangement it has a single headlight and the Brill passenger windows were retained, to be replaced at a later date.
