Now in Pinehurst
Title:  Now in Pinehurst
Description:  This shot shows the empty trestle pocket in Pinehurst. This was the "coach yard" lead and it looked much like the current ACW trestle seen here. The yard lead went maybe another 75 to 100 yards from here, then back to the main. If you can see the white stake in the distant background, that is where the lead went back to the main.

Coach yard
Title:  Coach yard
Description:  The sandy, open area to the right here is where the coach yard used to be. There were 4 tracks here and spread from the main over to the rear of the autos shown here. About where the red colored car sits, used to be a greasy spoon grill of sorts. The yellow speed resrtiction sign behind the green and white van is where the coach yard lead ran North and crossed over the trestle.. from previous pictures.

Water tower
Title:  Water tower
Description:  I remember climbing on the long gone water tower. The wooden 4 x 4 seen in the lower right of this frame is where a water tower used to be. It has these 4x4 timbers around it, ballast and this larger diameter steel pipie, with a swing over tube at the top. It was braced up and the top portion swung out over the main seen here. I used to climb on that and watch the gray NS GP38's, 18's and red Baldwins chug by. Me and my Brownie camera. This single 4x4 and bent over timber screws are all that's left. I tried to uncover this timber before I took this picture. Couldn't uncover much of it.

Old spur roadbed
Title:  Old spur roadbed
Description:  You can see the old roadbed in the center of this frame. To the left is the Pinehurst (NC) Country Club. The first fairway for the #2 course where the men's US Open Golf Tournament has been played and again in 2014. The track center line was pretty much in line with the orange utilities cone.

Looking North. The roadbed continued as it paralled highway 2 on the left and #2 golf course on the right. You can barely make out the roadbed location, but the power poles are about where the track used to run.

Grown over roadbed
Title:  Grown over roadbed
Description:  The roadbed came here and crossed Cherokee Road in the far background, this street.. Everette Road and continued on to the power plant and lumber yard. You can make out the roadbed by the lower tree line in the center of this frame. Yes, that house on the right was close to the track when they were in place. The trellace is about the right hand rail was located. My house is to the extreme left of this frame, not visible.

Old stick of rail
Title:  Old stick of rail
Description:  This section and a half of rail is what NS used to operate on this spur line. The action roadbed is where the whiter sand is, seen in the background and ran right to left in this frame. I can now understand why the red 6 axle Baldwins derailed when they came down this spur.

Another street crossing
Title:  Another street crossing
Description:  Here, the track crossed Dundee Road in Pinehurst. A switch was about where the under road culvert is in the background. To the left, the track continued about another 1/8 of a mile and dead ended on an elevated trestle at the power plant. There, coal cars were dumped in different bins according to coal chunk sizes. Fuel oil was also off loaded to large above ground tanks, which were below the trestle system. Also at this switch, to the right it ran about the same distance over to the lumber yard.

Power plant / trolley house
Title:  Power plant / trolley house
Description:  This arched doorway is where the Pinehurst Trolley used to operate out of. The building itself is part of the now defunct power plant. Coil and fuel oil were used in the plant to supply the hotels and ceratin homes in Pinehurst with steam heat. In the wonters, we as kids could tell where the steam lines ran all through town, by the nice warm steam coming out of ground boxes.

Description:  The spur, spur... once it split from the power plant lead, came over and crossed McCaskill Road shown here. To the left is part of the remaining lumber yard. Note the bay doors along the side of the building. There still stands a lumber drying kiln..not in this picture, but to the far right of this frame. Title:  Old transformer
Description:  ACW moves out the old Progress Energy transformer as new ones have been installed. This is the first time, that I remember ever seeing this large type equipment move on this line. NS may have done it back in the early 70's when they operated this line, but I was too young to remember if so.

Aberdeen and Asheboro depot
Title:  Aberdeen and Asheboro depot
Description:  This depot sat in Pinehurst and was once home to the Aberdeen and Asheboro, then Norfolk Southern passenger/freight services. To the far right, you can see a trolley car. This trolley used to operate from here, down throughout the streets of Pinehurst taking people from here to there. There are still one or two streets in Pinehurst where the roadbed and bedcross ties can be seen and felt when driving down that street.
