Built by EMD and delivered in September of 1949, this unit served NP faithfully and fransitioned into the Amtrak roster later. No photographer listed for this nice photo nor any date given so it is an approximation. The location was identified by the massive coaling tower located in the Missoula yard. |

When the order for electric locomotives bound for the Soviet Union in 1946 was cancelled, these locos, labeled "Little Joes" were sold to the Milwaukee Road and Chicago South Shore & South Bend. This is an example of the 12 axle powered unit. Unfortunately the b&w photo doesn't show the brilliant orange and black color scheme. NP depot at Missoula I should say. The only reason I took this trip to Montana in late March is because I got bumped from my clerks job in Bellingham WA and had to check out other places to work. Good thing I dint find any place in Montana especially on the ex-NP lines because they would be MRL. Most of the BN clerks and operators working the ex-NP/MRL ended up in BN "rubber-rooms" to protect their guarantees from the Frisco Merger. Was a very troublesome time for a lot of BN clerks/oprs as a result of the MRL. |
