This was one of 1,900 class XM-32B 40' boxcars built by CB&Q's Havleock, Nebraska shops during 1950, this particular one is stencilled as built HV. 11.50. When built it was equipped with a six foot corrugated door, but likely exchanged it for a seven panel door during shopping. It is stencilled as having visited Havelock again: HV 10.66. But, it has lost the roofwalk, note the cut down ladder on the right side, so it might have visited a shop sometime after roofwalks were outlawed. It is also stencilled: RETIRED DO NOT LOAD CW 11-77. |

Number 724 was built in March 1963 (c/n 28204), retired in April 1982 and sold for scrap. Number 340 was built in September 1957 (c/n 23696) and was retired April 2, 1981. It began as a normal 1750 hp GP9, but between 1962-65 the UP installed EMD turbochargers on 55 of its 300-series GP9's, creating 2000 hp GP9's, or, as they became known, Omaha GP20's. The Omaha GP20's also received large 2400 gallon fuel tanks and some were further modified with heaters in the tanks to allow them to use Bunker C fuel oil. Those locomotives were converted back to diesel fuel in the 1970's. However, as the conversion back to diesel was taking place, the UP was adding 2400 gallon tanks to some of the un-converted Omaha GP20's as well as to some of the un-turbocharged GP9's. So, while number 340 shows a larger fuel tank, it is unknown if it was ever converted to burn Bunker C fuel. |

As far as I can tell it was in KC headed to Mid America Car, who would repaint it and remove the center porthole- a configuration it had in later yers. |
