Title:  Duluth & Iron Range Railroad Depot
Description:  With the rise of iron ore pellet (taconite) shipments from the ore docks in Two Harbors, MN, the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad built this large office with the lower left corner serving as a depot for the growing town. Shipments of ore began in 1884 but it wasn't until 1907 that the DIR corporate headquarters and depot were established in this building.

Duluth & Iron Range Railroad Depot
Title:  Duluth & Iron Range Railroad Depot
Description:  Unfortunately, passenger service to the depot ended in 1961 and freight service to the depot ended in the 1980's. The building was donated to the Lake County and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Today the lower portion of the building houses the original depot that serves the North Shore Scenic Railroad tourist excursions and the Lake County Historical Museum.

Description:  This is a view toward the west of the current Canadian National/North Schore Scenic RR ROW. Around the curve leads into the CN iron ore that feeds the taconite to the Two Harbors loading docks. That was a fairly restricted area so no photos were taken of it.

Description:  Displayed in a place of honor next to the historic Duluth and Iron Range depot is the first steam engine used to move taconite iron ore from the mines to the newly built wooden ore docks for loading onto ships. Originally builty by Baldwin in 1883 for the Tehuantepec Interoceanic Rwy of Mexico who never took delivery, the newly formed Duluth and Iron Range grabbed it up. It cost $9,750 at the time and when it arrived was given the nickname "3 Spot".

Its first duties were to haul track laying supplies needed to build the trackage into the iron ore mines. Later it was used to haul the ore out to be delivered to the ore loading docks in Agate Bay (Two Harbors), MN.

Description:  After working only 13 years for the DIR, it was sold to the Duluth and Northern Minnesota to work at the Alger-Smith Logging Company. It was renumbered DNM #2. After that stint at the logging company, it was sold several times and almost scrapped, the little loco was finally purchasedfor display at the DIR depot.

Title:  Two Harbors Ore Docks
Description:  Tightly connected to the history of railroading in Minnesota is the discovery of huge deposits of iron ore in the Iron Range loacted just west of Two Harbors. Iron ore pellets called taconite were brought from the mines by trains to the ore docks for shipment to steel mills. The Duluth and Iron Range RR was one of the first to move the ore from the mines to the docks.

Description:  The Duluth & Iron Range Railroad was one of the first to move the taconite to the ore docks. Later reorganized, the Duluth, MIssabe & Iron Range Railway carried on. In 2004, Canadian National purchased the DMIR and now supplies the rail power to feed these ore docks. Only the two docks on the right are in service today.

Title:  Two Harbors Ore Docks
Description:  The two docks serving the CN railroad were built in 1916 (left one) and 1911 (right one). The older one (right)stand 75 feet above the waterline and stretch 1,344 feet long whilte the newer one (left) is 80 feet high and 1,368 ft long. Both docks have tracks that CN uses to bring the taconite pellets to dump into pockets for offloading to ships. A conveyour belt is also on the left dock for loading from the rail yard directly..
