The Engine House Site |

I came across this wooded mystery track near the Division Street grade crossing. At first I assumed it was from a long-dead spur track. However, a check of the "Faribault 1930" track map on page 94 of John C. Luecke's "More Milwaukee Road In Minnesota", I concluded that this track actually belonged to the single-stall engine house that used to be here. JCL recounts in the book how, in all his years in Faribault, he never saw a diesel being serviced here. Apparently the structure had become just a curiosity after the demise of steam until it finally fell to the wreckers in 1983. (JCL recently confirmed that this is indeed the engine house site. Thanks John!) |

In 1995 when I first visited the old Milwaukee Road Faribault depot, three or four silver hopper cars were parked beside it to take on recycled aluminum stored in the south end of the Milwaukee yard site. Then as late as 2004 another customer required service in this area. Now the rails are empty, awaiting whenever the next train comes at last. |
