ICG and NOPB
Title:  ICG and NOPB
Description:  Looking downriver from Louisiana Avenue, standing on the ICG "main line" to Levee Yard. The two tracks on the left were the New Orleans Public Belt's main lines, and the land on the other side of the chain link fence was once a small NOPB yard. The aluminum relay shelter in the middle of the photo was Harmony Street Interlocking, where the ICG crossed the NOPB.

Southern SD45 3439
Title:  Southern SD45 3439
Description:  The Southern Railway’s 70 SD45’s were among my all-time favorite diesel locomotives, and none of my images illustrate them better than this one. The engineer on Southern 3139 was biding his time as he waited for a clear route on the New Orleans Terminal Co. at the Frenchmen Street signal. No. 3139 was on No. 194, the run-through train from the Southern Pacific to Birmingham, along with SD35 3090 and SD45 3100.

On the left was the Kansas City Southern coming in to connect with the New Orleans Public Belt, next were the two NOPB main tracks, and on the right were two Illinois Central Gulf main tracks. The signal on the ICG protected the crossings with the NOPB and KCS at LAMBERT JUNCTION.

Southern No. 194
Title:  Southern No. 194
Description:  Southern Railway No. 194, the run-through train from the Southern Pacific at Houston to Birmingham, was raising quite a racket as it rolled across the Seabrook drawbridge on its way out of New Orleans. The bridge spans the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, which connects the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain, just off to the right. The sign next to the first car showed that the speed limit on the bridge was 45.

Southern 3589
Title:  Southern 3589
Description:  Southern Railway 3589 was photographed in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal about one year before the railroad turned over the operation of the SOUTHERN CRESCENT to Amtrak. This was one of three Railway Post Office-baggage cars built for the railroad in late 1950 by American Car & Foundry. The 3589 was technically owned by the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific - as shown by the initials on the letterboard at this end of the car, while the 1727 and 1728 were owned by the Southern itself; and all three were converted into full baggage cars after RPO service ended. The 1727 and 1728 were retired when Amtrak took over the operation of the SOUTHERN CRESCENT in 1979, but this car was sold to Amtrak. It was initially numbered Amtrak second 1022, then modified for head-end power and renumbered 1127, and was stored in 2007. The lettering on the end of the car reads THIS CAR EQUIPPED WITH HYATT JP1A OIL BOX JOURNAL BEARINGS-DO NOT SUBSTITUTE ALTERNATE BEARINGS.

Southern NW2 1058
Title:  Southern NW2 1058
Description:  Southern Railway NW2 1058 was powering a short westbound transfer run along former New Orleans Terminal Co. trackage at L&N Junction. The little train is on the Freight Lead and is crossing a Louisville & Nashville industrial spur. Up until 1954, this L&N track and another one next to it were the main line into downtown New Orleans. The track became a spur serving an industry on Elysian Fields Avenue at Florida Boulevard in 1954, and it was removed shortly after this photo was taken.

The two tracks on the left of the train are the NOTCO main line. The bridge over the train is Interstate Highway 10, while the bridge in the background is Franklin Avenue. The 1058 was built in September 1948 as the 2267 and it spent most of its life at New Orleans. It was renumbered 1058 in December 1972, and was withdrawn from service at New Orleans in June 1980.

ICG Mays Yard
Title:  ICG Mays Yard
Description:  The Illinois Central only owned 10 U33C's, units 5050-5059 built in 1968. The 5055 was wrecked and retired in 1969, so here were one-third of the existing fleet - the 5058! 5054 and 5050 - together at Mays Yard with former GM&O SD40 914. The three GE's were retired in 1984 and sold for scrap, but the 914 survived much longer as ICG ane then IC 6063.

Southern SD45 3154
Title:  Southern SD45 3154
Description:  For many years, the locomotives that arrived in New Orleans on the Southern Railway's southbound piggyback train No. 219 went back out on northbound No. 222. This usually worked well, but if No. 219 was running late, the railroad would take one or two locally-assigned geeps and head out with No. 222. When the two trains met, they would swap locomotives, and everything would return to normal. On this day, the local unit - GP38 2736 - only had to go five miles with No. 222 before it met No. 219 at the Airport crossover. Here, No. 219's power - SD45 3154H and 3169A, and SD35 3061X - has uncoupled from its train and is pulling up next to the 2736. The crews will swap engines, the engines will swap trains, and then both trains will be on their way. The drawbridge in the background crosses the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal at Milepost 190.6.
