IC Warehouse
Title:  IC Warehouse
Description:  For much of the twentieth century, the Illinois Central had scores of warehouse all around New Orleans. Eleven of them, numbered 1 through 11, were located within a 16-block area along the Mississippi River between South Diamond and Thalia streets. The last of these in existence was No. 3, located along Front Street between Gaienne and Erato streets. Notice how the railroad's initial conveniently fit on the end of the building, and its name across the front!

The IC originally reached this area by a track down St. Joseph Street from its passenger depot on S. Rampart Street, until it extended its track upsteam to a mainline connection at Southport around 1905. The track in the street here was the line from Levee Yard to Stuyvesant Docks Yard off to the right. Redevelopment of the this area began with the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Front Street was subsequently expanded and renamed Convention Center Blvd., and the site of Warehouse No. 3 is now under the ERNEST N. MORIAL CONVENTION CENTER.

ICG MAYS YARD
Title:  ICG MAYS YARD
Description:  This was the west (timetable north) end of the Illinois Central Gulf's MAYS YARD, just west of New Orleans, facing south. The main lines extended across the bottom of photo, with a portion of the yard office on the lower right. The wye identified the old connection with the former Harahan Yards and the Southern Pacific train ferry, which ran south towards the Mississippi River. Inside the wye were the engine servicing facilities. MAYS YARD never had a roundhouse or turntable, so steam engines were turned on the wye engines and coaled here with a clamshell crane.

Stored Power
Title:  Stored Power
Description:  By the time this photo was taken Amtrak had retired most of its E and F units, and stored many of its remaining older locomotives. Here are six of the surviving older engines stored at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal coach yard: E8Am 436, E9A 419, FP7A's 493 and 492, and E8A's 368 and 353. The 436 was built in May 1952 as Illinois Central 4029, and was upgraded by the IC into E10 2021 in February 1969. Amtrak bought it in February 1973, and it was the only IC unit purchased by Amtrak. The 419 was built in December 1963 as Union Pacific 419, and it had the distinction of being the last E-unit ever constructed. Both of these units were scrapped at NOUPT by Precision National Corp. in 1982.

The 493 and 492 were two of 14 FP7's acquired from the Southern Pacific, and the last two in existence. Originally SP 6454 and 6453, they became Amtrak 117 and 116 in July 1972, were renumbered 377 and 376 in April 1976, and renumbered to 493 and 492 in July 1977. Both were retired in May 1980 and sold to Precision National Corp. for scrap. E8A 368 was built in August 1950 as UP 929. It was subsequently Amtrak 326, 438, 368 and 469 before being retired in June 1981 and sold to PNC. E8A 353 was built in October 1953 as Baltimore & Ohio 26A and was renumbered B&O 1447 in 1957. It wore Amtrak numbers 203, 353 and 467 before being retired.

Description:  Southern SD24's weren't very common in New Orleans, so finding two of them on the same train was a real treat! These units - along with an SD45 - are on the Houston-Birmingham run-though train from the Southern Pacific. As was usual at the time, an Espee crew has parked the train on the New Orleans Terminal Co. westbound track at Frenchman Street. Eventually a rested Southern road crew will get on board and head for Meridian as train 194. The 6344 was built as NO&NE 6950, while the 6301 was originally SOU 2503. Both units were retired the year after this photo was taken, and both were de-turbocharged for new careers on the Chicago & North Western. (approximate date)

SOU 3807
Title:  SOU 3807
Description:  The Southern Railway only owned ten U33C's (3805-3814) and they spent much of their careers in maintenance-of-way service. On a dreary morning, 3807 and 3812 are on a welded rail train at New Orleans. The train is parked on the spur that served the American Standard plumbing fixture plant, just west of the Seabrook drawbridge. The northbound track here already has welded rail, while the southbound track still has jointed rail.

Southern U23B 3917
Title:  Southern U23B 3917
Description:  Southern Railway U23B 3917 is about to enter Oliver Yard with a special train of oversize steel girders. Although it is a special train, it is flying green flags, which show that it is running as the first section of a regularly-scheduled train. In this case, it is operating as First No. 169.

The train has just passed under the Almonaster Avenue overpass, crossed the former New Orleans Terminal Co. main line, and is crossing the Florida Avenue drainage canal. The NOTCO crossings were eventually removed.
