KCS 799 leading train #55 |
| Description: |
A KCS trio of a GP40-2, F7(A) Slug, and GP40, drag a freight across Essen Lane on their way from Shreveport to New Orleans. The train is either a #53 or #55(most likely) on the the "New Orleans Sub" of the "Louisiana & Arkansas Division" for the KCS. Train 55 usually had chemical empties returning to Baton Rouge. It also carried piggybacks. (53 ran the same route, but to Family Lines' Gentilly Yard) KCS 799 was part of a two unit order delivered August 1979, making it five years old in this shot. |

UTC Dome |
| Description: |
In 1956 the Union Tank Car Company began to design a revolutionary tank car maintenance shop which would be constructed along the Kansas City Southern “D” Line at Alsen, just north of Baton Rouge. The shop would be enclosed in a geodesic dome 384 feet in diameter and 128 feet high; and when it was completed in October 1958, it was the world’s largest clear-span structure. The main feature of the shop was a circular transfer table which served 30 maintenance positions; and the design was considered so successful that Union built a similar structure at Wood River, Illinois in 1961.Unfortunately, the transfer table was designed for 1950-size cars, and it could not accommodate the longer cars which came along soon after it was built. Union sold the property to the Kansas City Southern in 1990; but the railroad was more interested in the land than the dome, which sat vacant and deteriorated. In November 2007, just one year before it would have been eligible for placement on the National Register of Historic Places, KCS obtained a demolition permit from the City of Baton Rouge and quickly razed the dome. |

KCS SD50 712 and SD40-2 656 |
| Description: |
On Thursday morning 28 March 2002 Kansas City Southern northbound intermodal train No. 10 struck an 18-wheeler loaded with concrete piles at the Louisiana Concrete Products grade crossing in Baton Rouge. This photo was taken three days later, and shows the train’s first two engines parked on the BATON ROUGE MORNING ADVOCATE newspaper plant siding. The damage to the train’s lead unit, SD50 712, is obvious; while the second unit, SD40-2 656, had a gash on the engineer’s side of its fuel tank. The train’s third unit, SD40M-2 626, was unharmed, as was the crew. |

IC SD40-2 6104 |
| Description: |
Canadian National-Illinois Central SD40-2 6104 was parked at Baton Rouge. The locomotive was originally Burlington Northern 6712, built in February 1976, and was one of 44 BN units acquired by the IC after their original 15-year lease expired on 31 April 1991. The IC removed the dynamic brakes from these units, but left them on the 17 BN units it acquired the next year. |
