Espee Extra West |
| Description: |
Powered by an eclectic set of locomotives, a Southern Pacific EXTRA WEST was heading out of the railroad's Avondale Yard, just west of New Orleans. Southern Railway GP35 2680, SD40-2 3257 and an unidentified SP B30-7 were providing the motive power as the train rolled across the George Street grade crossing. The 2680 was displaying white lights and was wearing one flag! |

MP MP15DC 1534 |
| Description: |
During most of the 1970's Missouri Pacific MP15DC's were very common around New Orleans, as units 1545-1554 had been sent here right after they were built in February 1975; but finding the 1534 at Avondale Yard a bit unusual. This unit was from the very first order of MP15DC's anywhere, MP 1530-1534, built in March 1974. |

MP SD40-2 6016 |
| Description: |
Between 1976 and 1980 the Missouri Pacific purchased 74 SD40-2's for use on unit coal trains. The obvious difference from the railroad's other SD40-2's was the dynamic brake housing, but the first 20 units - such as this one - were also equipped with a nose-mounted oscillating light so as to be compatible with D&RGW power. These 20 units were delivered as the 3216-3235, and then renumbered 6000-6019 in May 1978, while the other 54 coal units were delivered new as the 6020-6073. All of them became Union Pacific 3900-3973. |

Amtrak No. 1 |
| Description: |
During the 1980 Christmas Season, Amtrak regularly leased Southern Pacific SD40T-2 units to assist pairs of SDP40F's on very long SUNSETS, and here is SP 8564 - along with Amtrak 511 and 518 - accelerating a westbound train out of Avondale Yard. By this time, most of the other western long-distance trains had been re-equipped with SUPERLINERS; so Amtrak was able to run 15-car SUNSETS, which was still steam heated, using some of the cars released from these other trains. Within a few months, the SUNSET itself would also receive SUPERLINERS, and it would never again operate with this many cars unless something REALLY special was going on! |

MP Trains |
| Description: |
This photo is a bit fuzzy because it was made from a small section of a telephoto shot. It shows a pair of eastbound Missouri Pacific trains that were parked just west of the railroad's Avondale Yard, waiting to get in. On the left was Southern run-through train HNS (Houston-New Orleans to the Southern) with SD40-2 3239, SD45 3161 and SD40 3183; while next to it was an unidentified train with GP38-2 2251, U23B 4505 and GP38-2 2292. The next year the MP would merge with the UP and the Southern would merge with the Norfolk & Western, so scenes like this would soon disappear. |

Slug Set |
| Description: |
The MP only had four SW1500's, and they spent their early years in the New Orleans area. When they were shopped and repainted in late 1981, they were also wired to operate with slugs; and three of them (1518, 1520, 1521) returned in October with brand-new slugs 1417-1419. In this view on a ready track at Avondale Yard, 1520, 1417, 1418 and 1518 wait between assignments. Their jobs included deliveries to other railroads at the east end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, pushing trains over the bridge, and transfer runs across the bridge to the MP's Race Street Yard -- a 17 mile trip. A set like this could pull a very heavy train across the bridge, with its 1.25% grades; but they were VERY, VERY slow. Before long, all of the slug sets were being used individually as yard power; mostly at Avondale, but occasionally at Race Street. They left in July 1982 and never returned! |

In this northwestward view of the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific yards at Avondale, Louisiana the SP's turntable and little roundhouse were in the foreground, with two sets of road power on the right and a quartet of transfer geeps on the left. The MoP's diesel shop was in the upper left, and the Mississippi River flowed from left to right across the top of the image on its way to the Gulf. The roundhouse and diesel shop are long gone, as are the SP and the MoP! |

Lined up and ready |
| Description: |
At this time, it was still common to see merged road power in its original form, and a lot of it still on its own rails. Here we see a set of MP power set to go out on a westbound. Even the sign still says MP. |

Westbound Espee |
| Description: |
Southern Pacific SD45R 7405 was on a westbound SP train leaving AVONDALE YARD at 3:00 PM with the 7404"and 7409. These low-numbered rebuilt SD45's were typically used on the run-through trains to and from the Southern and then the NS, as they were maintained to a higher standard than most SP units. The tracks'on the left belonged to the Union Pacific. |

A variety of power rests at the Avondale diesel shop. The MP diesel shop in the background was partially destroyed during Hurricane Katrina and eventually torn down. That was the best excuse yet to move locomotive maintenance to Livonia, LA, no more diesel shop. |

MP 2322 Leads Operation Lifesaver Special |
| Description: |
One of the great things about train spotting in the New Orleans area was the large assortment of railroads. This five railroad assortment also carried the governor of Louisiana with the MP, ICG, KCS, SP and UP all represented on this trip. The train is headed west and coming off the Huey P. Long brdge. My friends with the MP who invited me to ride could not understand why I chose not to ride. This scene will never happen again. |

The New U.P. |
| Description: |
It was a couple of years after the 1982 MP-WP-UP merger before Union Pacific and Western Pacific locomotives became common on the Missouri Pacific around New Orleans, so it was a real treat to find units from all three roads outside the diesel shop at Avondale yard. From left to right are WP GP40 3531 (with UP SD45 No. 21), UP SD40-2 3785, and MP GP38-2's 2166 and 2205. |
